That's a good question. Below are the results from the Charlie Vettiner Open last year. This is a good example of what scores look like for each division. All three rounds of that tournament used the regular 18 holes (no added holes). The Recreational division played from the short pads at this tournament and everyone else played from the longs.
Even if you're not very competitive at first, playing tournaments is great experience because it allows you to play with new people, you can see how they play, get used to the slower tournament pace of play, and even if you don't win anything nearly every tournament has a players pack so you'll always way away with something.
