Sand Traps

This may be a dumb question but why do some disc golf course have sand traps? I don't really see it causing many problems on your next shot if you go in the trap. Is it there as a penalty. Like if your disc goes in the trap it is a extra stroke added? :?

Yes, sand traps play like a OB. You would take a one stroke penelty and throw from a lie one meter from where your disc was last in bounds. We will likely utilize sand traps at Meade/Olin in the redesign.

There are sand traps that wrap around hole 18 green at White Park and there are two holes at the Fun Farm with sand traps near the baskets.
